Bogue offers the residents of mining town Rose Creek pennies on the dollar for their homes and land, and, after being rebuked, has a group of locals, including Cullen's husband, Matthew Matt Bomer , gunned down in cold blood. Saarsgaard's villainous Bogue gapes his mouth with quivering elation, while Ethan Hawke's puppydog eyes betray Goodnight's image of the deadly sharpshooter. Unfortunately, it is too little, too late. Here, blacks are extremely inky, but there are many scenes when shadow detail is completely absent due to crush. Some of this is related to the outdoor photography, but the image is simply too dark in spots. All told, a great movie for a quiet Saturday afternoon. The film certainly looks and feels like a classic Western, from the costumes to the sets to the landscape. Fortunately, Fuqua comes through with many charmingly personal moments that endear his cast and set us up for a fist-pumping climax. The original The Magnificent Seven is adventurous and exciting, and Seven Samurai is a memorable classic.
Interesting some of the nicer moments in character developement have been lost to the editing, for example, a few moments between Pratt and D'Onofrio's character. I have seen three bombs in a row over the last two weeks and two of them I paid to watch. We get a good collection of deleted scenes, looks at the bios of the characters, behind the scenes looks at the direction of the shoot, and the film's epic music written by James Horner. So in closing if your a big fan of the actors in it and you might be surprise like me in how good it turn out for modern day remakes. The disc is packed in a standard case that is wrapped in a textured slipcover. And Ethan Hawke hits just the right notes as the man who has a great reputation, but fears he can no longer live up to it. The writers missed out on what made the older Magnificent Seven a great film not even mentioning the legendary Seven Samurai.

They must prepare the town to repulse an army of over 100 bandits who will arrive wanting food. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue Peter Sarsgaard , the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns. They end up with 7, each of whom comes for a different reason. Even though I cared little who lived or died, Fuqua does stage one strong action sequence involving a Gatling gun toward the finale. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money. I was expecting a let down compared to the 1960 version but that wasn't the case.

Instead of thrilling, the extended action bits grow repetitive, and The Magnificent Seven often feels like it is running down a Western checklist instead of providing a natural, compelling narrative.
